2017-18 Senior British League R1 Results

The 2017/18 Senior British League is a TTE national league played in regional divisions.

Matches are played across four rounds (weekends):

  • 7/8 Oct 2017
  • 4/5 Nov 2017
  • 21 Jan 2018
  • 14/15 Apr 2018

Ashford TTC has two teams competing in separate divisons:

  • Ashford I in National C-5
  • Ashford II in National C-4

Our region’s matches are played at Cippenham TTC in Slough.

Ashford I

The first 4 matches took place over the weekend of 7th & 8th of October 2017.

Team: James Sprackling, George Long, Farhat Rasul, Sammy Kaye, Moises Ballad Jr

Match 1: Drawn in a particularly strong Division C5, the first team kicked off proceedings against new league entrants, Table Tennis Fight Club (London), who boasted a former Chinese Junior Girl’s champion amongst their midst.

The Ashford team did very well to record a 6-3 win with James Sprackling, the team’s number one, extending the aforementioned Chinese ace to 5 games.

An excellent maximum was recorded by team captain, Farhat Rasul (aka Raz), with winning contributions made by the whole team including debutant, Sammy Kaye, as well as George Long playing at number 2.

Match 2: Next up on Saturday were early Division favourites, Greenhouse (London), a team of highly ranked England juniors.

A 6-3 loss could have easily been reversed with Ashford losing 3 matches in 5 in what was a very tight encounter.

Star of the show was Sammy winning both his singles and James who beat Greenhouse number 1, Eren Gozcu.

Match 3: Sunday morning’s game saw Moises Ballad Jr (aka Jun) make his SBL debut in place of resting team captain, Raz.

The morning’s match was against a relatively weak Fusion (London) team who were duly dispatched in clinical style 9-0.

Match 4: The afternoon’s opponents were the appreciably stronger Dartfordians (London) team who had been bolstered with two new stronger players from the previous day.

After losing the first two matches things weren’t looking good, but Jun and Sammy both played excellently to win the next two matches to level at 2-2 and then George and Sammy combined again to win the doubles to secure a 3-2 lead.

With all to play for James blitzed the Dartfordians number 1: 11-4,11-1 & 11-7.

George then recovered superbly from two games down to beat his opposite number and Jun completed a personal maximum for the match (and day) by winning his and the final match of the tie to complete a very satisfying 6-3 victory.

Summary: Played 4 Won 3 Lost 1 and joint second place with all to play for.
Star Player: Sammy Kaye making his debut for the senior Ashford team and winning 6 out of 8 with a special mention too to fellow debutant, Jun, who won all his matches on Sunday.

Ashford II

The Ashford second team were competing at the same level as the first team but in a different division, C-4. The first 4 matches took place over the weekend of 7th & 8th of October 2017.

Team: Michael Silver, Sarah Horsnell, Yun Song Cheang, Alexander Gough, Derek Holman

Match 1: On Saturday things started well with a 6-3 win against Newton Abbott TTC (Devon) with everyone contributing to the win.

Match 2: The afternoon’s match was against Horsham Spinners (West Sussex), a team made up of 4 highly experienced veterans who must rate as one of the stronger teams in the league.

An 8-1 defeat doesn’t really reflect the closeness of the match but experience told in the end with the sole victory coming from Yun Song Cheang (aka Tommy) who beat Surrey veteran, John Robinson.

Match 3: Sunday saw Sarah replaced by Derek Holman. In the morning the team played Haywards Heath (West Sussex) led by Marc Burman.

A 6-3 defeat was most notable for the two singles and one doubles success for Alex Gough.

Both singles were epic 5 setters with Alex saving many match points before prevailing. Alex & Tommy took the doubles 3-1.

Match 4: The team’s final outing was against Godalming Simply Let II (Surrey) led by former top junior Rob Pountney.

Another highly commendable performance by Alex saw him record two more singles victories (both in 5 games again), but that was not enough to prevent a 6-3 defeat in a long drawn out affair with Tommy beating promising junior, Jamie Nordin.

Summary: Played 4 Won 1 Lost 3 and 6th place but with potential to rise up the table.

Star Player: Alex Gough for his 100% record on day two.
